Volunteer Opportunities

If you have an interest in the environment and a few hours to spare on a regular basis consider joining our volunteer team.

Volunteers at the World Aquarium work along side our professional staff, interacting with the public, guiding students through exhibit realms, working with Board of Directors’ committees and maintaining exhibits. The only experience needed is a well honed smile.

Docent
Docents work on the exhibit floor providing information to our visitors about our exhibits and assisting with animal interaction. Docents usually volunteer for a regular shift of 2-4 hours on a weekly basis.

Education Assistant
Education Assistants give guided tours to groups visiting the aquarium as well as assist with various outreach programs. Volunteer hours vary with season. Education Assistants are encouraged to volunteer for 2-4 tours per month to keep up to date on our ever-changing environment.

Board Committee Person
The Board of Directors and Aquarium President host a number of working committees including the Conservation for the Oceans, fund raising, publicity, Sustainable Seafood and more. Committee volunteers often meet outside the aquarium and work behind the scenes.

Exhibit Maintenance
Volunteers assist the staff with regular daily maintenance such as cleaning exhibits, wiping algae, cleaning exhibit areas and equipment. Those who excel in assigned tasks may be invited to expand the scope of duties to include water quality, animal handling and feeding.

Youth Volunteers
Children age 12 and up may be eligible for our Junior Volunteer program. The Junior Volunteers meet one day per week during the school year. Responsibilities include exhibit maintenance, animal talks and demonstrations to the public. Regular attendance and 100% commitment is expected of all Junior Volunteers.

Due to our small staff, we can only accept highly motivated and dedicated students. If your child would like to learn what it is like to work in an aquarium but can not commit to a regular program consider spending a day with our staff at Sea Camp or a 3 day Junior Assistant Curator Camp.

If you would like us to contact you with more information please contact us or complete the volunteer application.
